Toilet; Comfort, Design and Performance! If you follow my blogs you notice I have a tendency to write about the toilet a lot. You may ask yourself, why? In my opinion the toilet is one of the most important bathroom plumbing fixtures in our home. With that said it is imperative we keep it performing efficiently, be comfortable and have a stylish design as well. I will touch on these issues below.
Comfort. Of course comfort is purely subjective; however there are accessories we can add to a toilet to make it more comfortable. One of the simplest ways to do this is with the seat. Today we have a wide selection of toilet seats; there are soft close seats and even seats that integrate a bidet set-up. Some of the bidet seats will heat the toilet seat itself and even have air drying functions too. Kohler and Toto make soft close seats as well as Church. Probably the best known bidet seat is Toto, Toto manufactures a quality bidet seat with options ranging from cordless remote control to warm air dying to several different washing options. Another way to make your toilet more comfortable is with the height, today we can choose a “comfort height” toilet this toilet is slightly taller, making it easier to sit down and get up.
Design. Again design is a personal choice as well. However design in some cases can play into how well the toilet flushes. With most of the budget priced toilets the design will be lacking as you might imagine as well as the performance or you can choose the Toto Neorest toilet for the utmost in contemporary design and be assured of top performance. The plumbing fixture manufacturers have responded to meet every design taste and budget, along with improved performance. The leading manufacturers are Kohler, Toto, American Standard, Vortens, Crane and Gerber.
Performance. This includes sanitary performance as well. The leading manufacturers have placed an emphasis on performance in all areas. Of course flushing and cleaning is a major factor in your buying decision. Pay close attention to these key areas. Is the toilet WaterSense certified, does it have a fully glazed trapway and does it have a dual flush system.
The WaterSense certification helps consumers identify water-efficient products and programs that meet WaterSense water efficiency and performance criteria. Products carrying the WaterSense label perform well, help save money, and encourage innovation in manufacturing.
The Fully Glazed Trapway will help in preventing waste from adhering to the internal part of the toilet where the waste is dispensed to the sanitary plumbing system in your home.
Dual Flush Toilets are a relatively new design that allows you to choose the amount of water used to flush. You can choose as little as .6 gallons for liquid disposal or as much as 1.6 gallons for solid disposal.
